Oops! It’s upside down! We didn’t meant it  – my palm smartphone made a picture that way for some reason and I can’t rotate it back.

Never mind, internet is infinitive – I’ll do a better blog post later.

Drawn and Quarterly: The Worst TCAF report on the internets

Oh my, oh my! I just love these guys – they not just publish a great reading pieces but they also fanny!

Drawn and Quarterly: The Worst TCAF report on the internets.

People, DO ride the train from Montreal to Toronto with D+Q production manager Tracy Hurren, Monastiraki owner Billy Mavreas, and Mid-Life ink-stud Joe Ollmann. What fun! People, DO NOT go get beers with Andy Brown, Billy Mavreas, and Joe Ollmann as soon as you get off the train in Toronto because you will have to count in the books and that will be awful…

And then you think, oh, I can get out of this place after 2 pints and here comes Tom Gauld, David Turgeon, Jimmy Beaulieu, and Pascal Girard”.

Exactly at that time we’ve brought to library our stiff (with Oleg Ti). But we’ve been home. We had a word to come back home early so we never met with D&Q at Pilot bar. There is always next time.

Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2012 Questionnaire: Eugene Zhilinsky and Tatyana Yuditskaya

via Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2012 Questionnaire: Eugene Zhilinsky and Tatyana Yuditskaya | Afterword | Arts | National Post.

Q: Who are you?

A: We are Eugene Zhilinsky and Tatyana Yuditskaya – a husband and wife team. We do stories based on personal memoirs. We publish them on our label Editions Tchai. It’s our creative name.

Q: I hear you’ve never attended TCAF before? What gives? Explain yourself!

A: We were busy with the other projects including our newborn daughter, traveling and fashion design

Q: Have you ever been to Toronto before? To Canada? If not, what’s your favourite Canadian stereotype?

A: Actually we live in Toronto. Just near the lake Ontario. It’s across the street from our new home. Next year we are going to tell a bit about Canadian stereotype in our upcoming book “Toronto Grafiti”.

Q: What’s the coolest thing you’ve heard about the festival?

A: The coolest thing is growing public and creators interest to peace movement on Middle East. Last year the was Miriam Libicki with her amazing hot spotted Jobnik. This year will be Guy Delisle’s Jerusalem and our Rock Testament. We have even more novels set up in modern and ancient Jerusalem. This is really cool!

Q: How many comic festivals/fairs/conventions do you attend each year? Why are they so important?

A: We don’t do it mush in general (see second question). Last convention we were attending as invited artists was Biennale de Carnet de Voyages in Town of Clermont-Ferrand, France. It was in 2008. 4 years from now. Lets see what’s going on in the next 4 years.

Q: What’s the weirdest experience you’ve ever had with a fellow cartoonist?

A: Look, we are married and we do comic books and graphic novels. Sometimes there are the stories about each other. What’d be weirder?

Q: Which artist at the festival would you pick to write/draw your biography? Why?

A: Kate Beaton. We just love her brief views at world history and literature. But you’ve got to be at least Lester Pearson to have a chance to be cartooned by her. It’d never happened.

Q: If TCAF had a competition for best costume, who/what would you come dressed as?

A: Superadam and Wondereve (chuckles) Oh, no! We just OK what we are

Q: What was your favourite comic as a kid? What’s your favourite comic now?

A: Our first ever comics were The Frankenstein Story by Classic Comics and Pif. It was somewhere in the mid seventieth. We like Joan Sfar now

Q: What’s your favourite thing to draw?

A: As it was recently said we do stories based on personal memoirs. So scribbling storyboards and travel sketches upon our journeys with intention to convert sometimes our sketchbooks storytelling into book of memoirs that’s probably a key

Q: Quick — name the best member of The Avengers? The worst?

A: We not much into superheroes. Did you mean The Avengers  – British TV series from 60-s?

Q: What’s the one comic book you’d love to see adapted into a movie?

A: There are two books – Danger Girls and Adventures of Rocco Vargas.

Editions Tchai’s Eugene Zhilinsky interviewed with Kimberley Whitchurch by Natalie Samson for Quill & Quire’s great article on small-press comics at TCAF. Check it out!

“It’s been a hard-knock education in publishing, but the pair has figured it out on the fly. “It was easy,” Zhilinsky deadpans. “We just bought a printing machine.”

Sketching TCAF visitors and our fans…

TCAF 2012 is over

Exhausted we just got back from TCAF . This experience was pretty useful though.  It was also very well organized event. And crowdy.  Probably on official TCAF website or Facebook Page there’ll be soon statistic info, but it seems that in two days TCAF attended about 10000 viewers – no less! We were exhibitors and we even sold some books and postcards. Not much because our stories not for everyone – we missing the mainstream target group but educated readers like it.

Now have a look at some  sketches we did during the show.

This is NOT Joan Sfar! It was just one nice person from the crowd.

The old man and the Real Book Lover. The Old Man tried to sell pictures by shooting artists with their books.

Nice Girl and Old Manga Fan.

My neighbors from the right tables – Jess Fink, Eric Feurstain and Oleg Ti.

Tony Cliff – my neighbor on the left table – signing his short bu fabulous graphic novel.

This girl tried to submit me her comics.

One very tall cyclist and cute hairdo.

Some years ago I was a huge fan of Michael Cherckas and his series “Silent Invasion”. It was a honor that famous coauthor of Silent Invasion series bought 3 our books.

The young crowd…

… and serious book lovers.

Also the array of other amazing books exhibited this time was simply abnormal.  Basically we spent for new reading about the same amount of money we just earned. Eventually we going to tell about significant books we’ve got but not now. Have fun!

TCAF this weekend!

The Big Run

Guess what? We did it! The latest (and already popular!) novel of Editions Tchai – Rock Testament – finally arrived from print house. It’s even better than our pilot version we did last year – it’s twice thicker, printed on better paper and has nicer cover color. This is the whole cinch of printing a big run offset. This book we going to present at TCAF in about two weeks.

Just in case you didn’t know: TCAF is The Toronto Comic Arts Festival, a week long celebration of comics happening in the city of Toronto.

TCAF @ Toronto Reference Library
789 Yonge. St, north of Yonge TTC
